Partners of Tradition The legend lives on! The 2009 Silver State Stampede Association
is working to keep alive over sixty years of Nevada rodeo
heritage. In order to continue presenting the oldest professional
rodeo in the state, our all-volunteer, non-profit organization
is requesting support from members of the Western community.
To celebrate Nevada’s ranching heritage, we are offering
a special package to Nevada’s brand owners. For $50,
your brand will be placed on our ‘Partners Of Tradition’
sign, which will be prominently displayed during our event,
held July 9, 10, 11 2009. In addition, you will receive
two admission tickets to the July 9th Kick-Off Party and
two tickets for the Kick-Off Dinner—delicious tri-tip with
a slew of side-dishes.
To be included as
a Partner of Tradition, please submit a clear drawing
of your brand with your $50 check, made payable to Silver
State Stampede Association, to the following address: Silver
State Stampede, 371 Mountain City Hwy. #7 Elko, NV 89801.
Thank you for your support, and we’ll see you in July!
Kick-Off Party: The Kick-Off party is one of the most exciting and
fun aspects of the rodeo. Thursday night brings the best
of the West to spectators of all ages. Start off the evening
with a delicious tri-tip dinner and spirits from our well-stocked
bar.
For
the gambling rodeo fan, the Calcutta provides the
opportunity to ‘buy’ your favorite Old West Bronc Rider.
The buyer of the winning bronc riders will win a portion
of the Calcutta purse. The total purse can amount to over
$10,000! The first elimination round Old West Bronc Riding will match
cowboys against Wally Blossom’s toughest broncs. The band kicks-up immediately following the last bronc rider,
and dancing carries on into the wee hours of the morning.
PRCA Rodeo: The Silver State Stampede is the oldest rodeo in Nevada.
The tradition of Elko’s annual rodeo started in 1913 when
GS Garcia, the world-famous bit, spur, and saddle maker,
decided that northern Nevada cowboys needed a rodeo, and
the town needed the added entertainment and income. Today’s Stampede has grown into a multi-faceted event, showcasing
the best of rodeo and ranch cowboys alike. The Stampede
won the award for 2006 Best Small Rodeo in the Wilderness
Circuit. We have won it four out of five years--in 2003,
2005, 2006, and 2007.
The PRCA stock contractor
is the
Bar T Rodeo Company of Chester, Utah, which is owned and
operated by Bud and Evelyn Kerby. With 50 years of experience
producing professional rodeos, Bar T brings to Elko some
of the best stock in the industry. Members of the Cowboy
Rodeo Hall of Fame, Kerbys have sent stock to the National
Finals Rodeo every year since 1959. They won
the PRCA 2006 Best Remuda award for their great bucking
stock.
Winners The Stampede is extremely unique in that it is the only
professional rodeo to offer Garcia spurs to event
winners. The winner of the saddle bronc riding also receives
a handcrafted, miniature bronc saddle made by local cowboy
and saddlemaker Bill Maupin. Event purses for the 2008 rodeo totaled over $20,000, with
$3,000 designated for each event.

World Championship Old West Bronc
Riding: In the tradition of old-time buckaroos, this is an exciting
ranch-style bronc riding is held in conjunction with the
PRCA rodeo. The event is open to amateur and professional
contestants alike. Entrants ride in the stock saddles they
work in every day, to simulate actual working conditions
of authentic modern-day cowboys and buckaroos. See
entry form. The OWBR winner will be determined by an
average on two head, and we now require a one-handed two
second start to each ride. There will be a third judge just
to time that aspect of it. Contact committee for complete
revised rules. Call Ralph Chiquete for more information at 775-397-2275 . The event is limited to 40 riders. Total prize money
is in excess of $14,000. The winner will also receive a custom made Skyline
Silversmiths buckle. Skyline Silversmiths will co-sponsor
the buckle for the OWBR.
Previous Winners of the OWBR:
- 2003 Eli Burr NV
- 2004 Jack Payne OR

Ring of Fear: Immediately following the PRCA performances on Friday and
Saturday, the crowd-pleasing Ring of Fear offers a thrill
to participants and spectators alike. Held directly in front
of the grandstand, six amateur ‘bullfighters’ are pitted
against a PRCA fighting bull. Each person must remain in
their designated circle as the bull charges, with contestants
being eliminated if they leave their circle to avoid the
bull—a half-ton of athletic, angry hooves and horns. The last man standing
in his circle (or lying, as the
case may be) wins $500. Exciting and unpredictable, the
Ring of Fear is yet another unique aspect of the Silver
State Stampede.
Western Dance:
Each night following the conclusion of the rodeo
performance, the live band strikes it up next to the outdoor
Cowboy Bar, located to the south of the grandstands. Dance
under the stars and mingle with rodeo contestants “Where
the Sidewalk Ends and the West Begins.”
Concessions,
Bar, and Vendors: Our concession stand offers a variety of high-quality food
and beverages, and our fully-stocked bar supplies beer,
wine, and mixed drinks. Vendors of western wear, tack, and
cowboy gear are scheduled to set up booths. A number of
unique Silver State Stampede souvenirs are also available,
including t-shirts, caps, and commemorative posters, which
have become quite a collector’s item. Prints from previous
years are also available. If you are looking to round out
your western art collection, or to start one, Silver State
Stampede posters are excellent choices.
Trade
Show: We will offer an expanded western gear show featuring cowboy
gear, western art, furniture, books, quilts, clothing, jewelry,
toys, stationary…just about anything that fits our wonderful
western lifestyle! Trade show opens at 4 pm each day.
The Silver State Stampede Association would like to extend
thanks to the vendors who have donated prizes to the Old
West Bronc Riding.

State Stampede Association holds a contest to design
the year’s poster. Entrants create a poster using the media
of their choice, and submit them for judging. The winner’s
art becomes a permanent part of the Stampede legend.
2009 Winner:
2009 winner was photographer Keith Clark. This is the first
time a photograph has been chosen. His entry was a stunning
photo of a bareback horse and rider coming out of the
chutes.

16" x 22". Artwork only, no lettering on poster.
Winner will receive a pair of commemorative Garcia
